2.3. "Gyaur"
Before all the "oriental poems" saw the light "Giaur". The story was written in May-November 1813. The Muslims called the Gentiles Gyaur.

“The story that constitutes the content of these discontinuous passages is based on incidents that are less common in the East at the present time than before, perhaps because the ladies are now more circumspect than in the old days, or because Christians are now smiling more happily, or they are less enterprising. In its finished form, the story was supposed to contain the story of a slave, thrown, according to Muslim custom, into the sea for infidelity, for which a young Venetian, her lover, avenges. This event is attributed to the time when the Seven Islands were under the rule of Venice and shortly after the Arvanites were driven out of the Morea , which they devastated some time after the Russian invasion. From the fall of the Minots , after they were not allowed to sack Mazitr , prevented the Russian enterprise and led to the destruction Morea , during whose time the cruelty shown by everyone was unparalleled, even in the annals of the faithful" [8]. So Byron began his story.

The plot of this poem boils down to the following: A giaur confesses to a monk on his deathbed. His incoherent story is the delirium of a dying man, some fragments of phrases, the last painful flash of consciousness. Only with great difficulty can one catch the thread of his thoughts. Gyaur passionately loved Leila, she reciprocated. Joy and light filled the whole being of the giaour. But the jealous and treacherous husband of Leyla Gessan tracked her down and murdered her villainously. The giaour terribly took revenge on the tyrant and executioner Leyla. Hessan died a painful death at his hands.

However, revenge did not bring the giaur either satisfaction or peace. His troubled spirit is tormented by a secret illness. He seeks to defend his personal dignity from the encroachments of some gloomy, dark world, which is personified in the poem by a mysterious and hostile background surrounding the hero. The nature of the giaur is revealed in the struggle and in the tragic contradictions of his soul: he fiercely resists the mysterious forces that threaten him; despair does not weaken his desire for action, for battles:

“... I vegetate a slug

In a damp dungeon underground

Sweeter than dead longing

With her fruitless dream …”[ 10]

The giaur is tormented by the thought that his "rich feelings" are wasted on meaningless things. In his monologue, there is an accusation against society, which made him an unfortunate renegade, humiliated him.

In the notes to the final lines of the poem, Byron briefly reports what served as the basis for the creation of "Giaur": Venetians. I accidentally heard this story in a coffee shop from one of the wandering storytellers with whom the East is teeming ... I regret that my memory has preserved so little of the true story for me ... ”[8].
