The Depiction of Female Characters
Chapter III. Analysis
There are five characters who experiences the practices of patriarchy in Eat, Pray, Love. One of those characters is the primary character and the rest are minor. The principal persona of Eat, Pray, Love is Elizabeth Gilbert. Researcher analyzes the characteristic of Gilbert similarly in thrid formulated problems, however in this section, researcher writes how Gilbert is described in the novel to introduce the persona toward the reader.
Elizabeth Gilbert is described as an unbiased woman. Gilbert can do everything by way of herself, along with price range herself and her own husband. Gilbert is additionally confident. She believes in herself. “The Bhagavad Gita-that ancient Indian Yogic text-says that it is better to live your own future imperfectly than to live an imitation of any person else’s existence with perfection.
So now I have started residing my very own life. Imperfect and clumsy as it may also look, it is akin to me now, thoroughly” (Gilbert, 2006, p. 108). Strong female is also the terrific phrase which describes Gilbert. She goes thru the sad marriage to the difficult depressing divorce life and she still manages. She does no longer give up on life, instead, she is inspired to build a new higher lifestyles by way of doing the trip thru Italy, India, and Indonesia.
So I stopped trying to choose-Italy? India? Or Indonesia?-and finally simply admitted that I desired to tour to all of them. Four months in each place. A 12 months in total. Of course this used to be a slightly more ambitious dream than “I desire to buy myself a new pencil box.” But this is what I wanted. And I knew that I wanted to write about it.
Gilbert is also described as a sensible female in seeing her problem. She does now not blame all and sundry but she considers this scenario as the way of transformation.7
I seem to be at the Augusteum, and I assume that possibly my lifestyles has not clearly been so chaotic, after all. It is simply this world that is chaotic, bringing adjustments to us that nobody ought to have anticipated. The Augusteum warns me not to get connected to any obstole ideas about who I am, what I represent, whom I belong to, or what characteristic I may additionally once have intended to serve. Yesterday I might have been a wonderful monument to somebody, proper enough-but the following day I ought to be a fireworks depository. Even in the Eternal City, says the silent Augusteum, one should usually be organized for riotous and infinite waves of transformation.
In her journey, Gilbert learns a lot of things from anyone and everything, even from abandoned constructing like Augusteum. The knowledge of Gilbert plays a big position in helping her recover from her broken heart. Indeed, Gilbert is the one who desires to ruin free from her marriage, but emotions of guilt often haunt her. “The tragedies in my life have been a personal and mostly self- created nature, no longer epically oppressive. I went thorugh a divorce and a depression, now not a few centuries of murderous tyranny. I had crisis of identity, but I also had the assets (financial, creative and emotional) with which try to work it out” (Gilbert, 2006, p. 128). Gilbert is able to see the effective value of her divorce, and it helps her to get better from the wound brought on by means of her divorce.
Gilbert is additionally described as an skilled woman, it can be considered from her profitable existence being a writer. As what has been noted before, there are four minor characters in Eat, Pray, Love who bear exercise of patriarchy. The characters are: 2.Gilbert’s Mother Mrs Gilbert’s attribute can be disclosed from her dialog with Gilbert and what Gilbert said about her. Referring to what Gilbert stated about her mother, researcher can conclude that the attribute of Mrs. Gilbert is that she is independent. “To my eye, there used to be nothing this woman should no longer do on her own” (Gilbert, 2006, p. 96). Gilbert’s mother is also inferior. Her husband is ignorant, but she can manipulate the family nicely and does no longer whinge about anything..
“My mother has made choices in her life, as we all must, and she is at peace with them. I can see her peace. She did not cop out on herself. The benefits of choices are massive-a long, stable marriage to a man she still calls her best friend; a family that has extended now into grandchildren who adore her; a certainty in her own strength. Maybe somethings were sacrified, … - but who amongst us lives without sacrifice?
