Forschungsschwerpunkte

Neben einer breiten Ausrichtung der Forschungsaktivitäten des

Lehrstuhls in den verschiedenen Teilbereichen der Medieninformatik

(Medientechnik, Mediendesign, Medienentwicklung, Medienverwal-

tung & Medienretrieval, Mediennutzung) liegt der Arbeitsschwer-

punkt im Bereich Medienverwaltung und Medienretrieval. Es geht

hier um die strukturierte Erstellung und Ablage multimedialer Daten

und Dokumente in größerer Zahl sowie um die gezielte inhaltsba-

sierte Suche nach den in einer konkreten Situation relevanten Daten

und Dokumenten.

Diese Problemstellung ist sowohl aus der Perspektive des Medien-

produzenten (Autoren, Verlage, Zeitungen, Filmproduzenten, ...)

als auch aus der Perspektive des Intermediärs und des Mediennut-

zers von zentraler Bedeutung. Wie kann ich große Mengen multime-

dialer Daten und Dokumente so verwalten, dass sie im Bedarfsfall

schnell und mit einer hohen Trefferquote zur Verfügung gestellt

werden können? Die prinzipielle Verfügbarkeit von Daten und Doku-

menten ist keineswegs gleichbedeutend damit, dass in jeder Situa-

tion auch die potentiell relevanten Dokumente zeitnah aufgefunden

werden können. Dies gilt gleichermaßen für Texte, Bilder, Audios

und Videos sowie - mit deren zunehmender Verfügbarkeit - auch für

multimediale Dokumente.

Dabei bilden insbesondere folgende Themenbereiche den aktuellen

Schwerpunkt der Forschung des Lehrstuhls:

• Suche in und nach strukturierten multimedialen Dokumenten

• Einbeziehung von Kontextinformationen zur Konkretisierung eines 

Informationsbedürfnisses

• Ähnlichkeitssuche nach komplexen graphischen Objekten

• P2P-Systeme und verteilte Systeme zur verteilten Medienverwaltung 

und zum Medienretrieval

Gegenstand des Information Retrieval ist die Suche nach Dokumen-

ten. Traditionell handelt es sich dabei um Textdokumente. In neue-

rer Zeit kommt aber verstärkt auch die Suche nach multimedialen

Dokumenten (Bilder, Audio, Video, Hypertext-Dokumente) hinzu.

Ferner hat das Gebiet des Information Retrieval insbesondere auch

durch das Aufkommen des WWW an Bedeutung und Aktualität ge-

wonnen.

Konkret geht es im Information Retrieval darum, aus einer Kollekti-

on von Dokumenten zu einem gegebenen Informationswunsch die

relevanten Dokumente zu ermitteln. Hierzu werden Techniken ein-

gesetzt, die weit über eine einfache zeichenkettenbasierte Suche

hinausgehen. So versucht man, von der konkreten Wortwahl in ei-

nem Dokument zu abstrahieren und statt dessen die Semantik des

Dokumentes zu adressieren.

Im Rahmen des Projektes wurde eine virtuelle Lehrveranstaltung

entwickelt, die die unterschiedlichen Aspekte der Dokumentensuche

behandelt, angefangen von der Formulierung des Informationswun-

sches über technische Aspekte wie die verwendeten Algorithmen

und Datenstrukturen bis hin zu Fragen der Beurteilung von Informa-

tion Retrieval Systemen.

Die virtuelle Lehrveranstaltung nutzt dabei insbesondere die Mög-

lichkeiten interaktiver Applets zur Illustration von Modellen und Al-

gorithmen sowie innovativer Kommunikationskonzepte zwischen

Studierenden und Betreuern.
