Transition From Traditional Web-Based Applications to Rich Internet Applications Powered with Ajax
Traditional server-client model web based software development approach cause difficulties in the utilization of applications, increase training costs, and reduce general return of investment. On the other hand, internet users want web pages run as desktop programs.
The new generation approach enabling this is called Rich Internet Applications (RIA), which enable interaction of users with web pages by combining rich graphical interfaces of desktop applications with universal connectivity of the web, reduce bandwidth uses and server loads; they therefore enhance end-user experience.
The Ajax technique plays the most important role in the RIA approach. Formerly referred to as Dynamic HTML and Remote Scripting as well, Ajax is at the same time a component of the Web 2.0 approach.
In this thesis study, after providing background information on the evolution of the traditional server-client model web based software development approach, the RIA approach and tools are discussed in detail and main applications developed using Ajax are outlined.
Applications such as Google Maps (map application), Flickr (photo sharing and copyrighting website), and Google Suggest (an application that prelists alternative search queries as a search query is being typed) are mentioned in the study.
This study comprises an instant messaging application called Ogrenc-im which is implemented using Ajax. The application which is in its prototype stage is running by using the data related with the students and faculty members of Informatics Department
