SOCIAL NETWORKS AND LANGUAGE: HOW INTERNET SLANG 
BECAME AN INTEGRAL PART OF YOUTH COMMUNICATION
Social networks have become an integral part of our lives. They allow us to communicate and share information 
with people from all over the world. However, the language we use on social networks has its own peculiarities. 
Social networks have become an integral part of our lives, and with them came a new language - internet slang. 
Internet slang is a special language used on social networks. It differs from ordinary language in that it uses 
abbreviations and acronyms, as well as incorrect grammar and spelling. This language is used to simplify and 
speed up communication, as well as to express emotions and feelings.
The functions of internet slang in youth communication can be diverse. Firstly, internet slang allows for time-
saving and simplification of the communication process. The youth uses abbreviations and acronyms to express 
their thoughts faster and more conveniently. For example, instead of saying “I agree,” one can write “I agr.” This 
helps to reduce the time spent typing messages and speeds up the communication process.
Secondly, internet slang helps to create a certain atmosphere in communication. The youth uses non-standard 
words and expressions to emphasize their individuality and attract attention to themselves. For example, the word 
“chikibambooni” can be used instead of “cool.” This creates a certain style of communication and helps the youth 
feel like part of a certain group.
Thirdly, internet slang can be used for message encryption. The youth can use non-standard words and 
abbreviations to hide their thoughts from prying eyes. For example, the word “cookie” can mean “password.” This 
allows for maintaining confidentiality in communication and avoiding unwanted consequences.
Internet slang has both positive and negative aspects. On the one hand, it increases communication efficiency. 
For example, abbreviations and acronyms allow for quick and easy expression of thoughts. On the other hand, 
internet slang can worsen writing skills and cause misunderstandings and conflicts.
To avoid the negative consequences of using internet slang, it is necessary to consciously use proper grammar 
and spelling. This will help maintain writing skills and avoid misunderstandings from other social media users.
However, internet slang has its advantages. It allows for creating a unique culture of communication and 
expressing emotions and feelings. For example, the use of emojis and stickers can help express one’s mood or 
emotions.

emotions on social media. Abbreviations and acronyms are a way to shorten long words and phrases into one or

maintaining personal connections with other people.
In the modern world, social networks play an important role in young people’s communication. Internet slang has 
become an integral part of this communication, allowing information to be quickly and easily transmitted. However, 
its use can lead to misunderstanding, a decrease in speech culture, and negative consequences in real life. 
Therefore, it is important to consciously and limitedly use internet slang, considering its negative consequences. 
Only then can young people effectively and safely communicate on social networks while maintaining speech 
culture and respect for other people.
