THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE SELF-ESTEEM AND TELEVISION
VIEWING HABITS OF ADOLESCENTS

Abstract
Televisions are ubiquitous in Azerbaijan homes. Adolescents have far greater access to television than ever before with
far less monitoring by caregivers.Most adolescent view an average of 3-4 hours of television a day and first develop
program preferences at age 2. In addition the nature of television programming has changed.One shift has been the increase
in frequency and intensity of sexual and violent acts on television.Cable services offer programs with even more frequent
and more graphic sex ,violence and drug use than broadcast television. Premium packages broadcast R rated movies in
unedited form . Another development is the creation of channels specifically geared toward adolescent allowing companies
to market directly to adelescent in capable of resisting the pressure to buy their products.There is the reality that most
programming on television is designed for adults and is not suitable for children and adolescent,yet they often see such
material and many times prefer it.Lastly there is the multi-sensory nature of television which is more stimulating than other
media such as books,music or comics.What are the consequences of this media environment on the developing psyche of a
adolescent? Does viewing television increase the likelihood of adolescent developing symptoms of mental illness?In this
study, revelant research from the fields of education and communication will be reviewed. The use of an integrated
literature review is critical to understanding the relationship between adolescent viewing and mental illness.As noted earlier
there is a wealth of research on television viewing but it is segregated by topic area. Most adolescent watch adult programs
