Most owners think translation of their restaurants menu is too easy and they don’t think about paying money to its
professional translation so they decide translate it by themselves but it has to be done by a professional translator-following
grammatical rules.
During the Eurovision song contest 2012 most restaurants of Baku added translation of meals to the menu.
I want to share an event: once I was at Yagmur restaurant and saw a ridiculous translation of Turkish meal- çöp kebab
(tavuk.) it was written as “trash chicken kabab” Trash means-litter, çöp- means stick here. But in Turkish language “çöp”
also means litter but not in this case. It has to be stick-chicken kabab.
Such kind of translation has to be done by using Translation or transliteration methods. For example kabab-kabab/
lahmacun-lahmachun. But there has to be note of ingredients at the bottom. Kabab-roasted meat, LuleKabab-
mincemeatkabab, Lahmacun-mincemeat on kind of thin flat bread baked by rolling dough and other. There are also
prominent food all over the world which is known to all such as Sezar salad, Russian salad and other (almost all know its
ingredients and taste)
I’ve conducted research and want to mention that in high leveled restaurants the menu just consists of names of food,
no matter it is Spanish, Italian cuisine. It is egoistic behavior I think. They don’t take into account that may be it is the first
time I’m testing this meal or I’m allergic to some ingredient the it has.
Baku is multinational city and it is the fact English is most used language. That’s why I think it is recommended to add
English language to the menu. Because we can’t know where do the foreign guests go? May be he/she wants to have a meal
in a just simple café or chai house-which is as a national sign of Azerbaijan culture. And I also want to continue this
tradition in different areas of Azerbaijan, where foreign guests can go. Aren’t I right? We do our best to have positive
remembrance about our county and it comes from our character, the character of hospitality of Azeri nation.
As the conclusion of my researches I think the menus of middle leveled restaurants is suitable not also foreign guest
but also to us too. High leveled restaurants need client who knows the types of meals well enough. Low leveled restaurants
need to be reestablish again from tip to toe. Thanks for your kind attention
