In this interdisciplinary volume old age and ageing are not simply

considered as a fixed biological or chronological process but as a

complex cultural phenomenon. The articles by various scholars ex-

plore fiction and the arts as sources of information on how artists

encounter age(ing) in different epochs and different social and cul-

tural environments. It deals with questions of the ageing artist and

his or her style, with specific gender problems and the representa-

tion of age in popular culture and film. The volume makes no claim

to arrive at a definitive analysis of age(ing) but rather aims to show

how fiction and the arts add a further dimension to our understan-

With the publication of Brian Gibbons’s Jacobean City Comedy thir-

ty-five years ago, the urban satires by Ben Jonson, John Marston

and Thomas Middleton attained their ‘official status as a Renais-

sance subgenre’ that was distinct by its farcical humour and ironic

tone from ‘citizen comedy’ or ‘London drama’ more generally. This

retrospective genre-building has proved immensely fruitful in the

study of early modern English drama over the last thirty-five years;

and although city comedies may not yet rival Shakespeare’s plays

in the amount of editorial work and critical acclaim they receive,

both the theatrical contexts and the dramatic complexity of the gen-

re itself and its interrelations with Shakespearean drama justly com-

mand an increasing deal of attention. Looking at a broad range of

play-texts written between the 1590s and the 1630s - master-pie-

ces of the genre like Eastward Ho, A Trick to Catch the Old One, The

Dutch Courtesan and The Devil is an Ass, blends of romance and sa-

tire like The Shoemaker’s Holiday and The Knight of the Burning

Pestle, and bourgeois oddities in the Shakespearean manner like

The London Prodigal - the twelve essays in this volume re-examine

city comedy in the light of recently foregrounded historical contexts

such as early modern capitalism, urban culture, the Protestant Re-

formation, and playhouse politics. Further, they explore the interre-

lations between city comedy and Shakespearean comedy both from

the perspective of author rivalry and in terms of modern adaptati-

ons: the twenty-first-century concept of ‘popular Shakespeare’

(above all in the movie sector) seems to realign the comparatively

time- and placeless Shakespearean drama with the gritty, noisy and

bustling urban scene that has been city comedy’s traditional preser-

ve.

This interdisciplinary volume about "Elizabeth I: Past and Present"

marks the 400th anniversary of the death of the Queen, one of Eng-

land’s greatest monarchs and a highly intelligent and successful ru-

ler. The volume will appeal to everyone interested in the charismatic

character of Elizabeth I, her time and afterlife. Distinguished contri-

butores from Europe and the United States will focus on important

aspects of Elizabeth’s subtle and resourceful political power and the

long-standing struggle she faced at home and abroad as well as the

threats posed to her power. The volume will also bring together for

the first time a series of papers about the fictive representations of

Queen Elizabeth I in literature, music and film. The articles will illu-

minate the fascinating story of her numerous afterlives and their si-

gnificance for the cultural history of England, its sense of identity

and psyche. Other articles will investigate the ceremony, festivities

and dance practices at her court and will bring to life the cultural si-

Noch bevor Shakespeare die Bühnen Londons eroberte, machte er

sich mit zwei auf Ovid basierenden Verserzählungen (Venus and

Adonis, The Rape of Lucrece) einen Namen; man pries die Verbin-

dung von frechem Witz und lyrischer Virtuosität. Venus and Adonis

handelt von der Liebe der Liebesgöttin zu dem "schüchternen" Ado-

nis, der bei einem Jagdunfall tragisch ums Leben kommt. Shake-

speare zieht alle Register der Liebes- und Trauermetaphorik, um

dieses kleine Drama der antiken Mythologie "zeitgenössisch" neu zu

gestalten. Die Ausgabe druckt den englischen und den deutschen

Text (in der Übersetzung von Ferdinand Freiligrath) ab. Daran an-

schließend folgen Anmerkungen, Literaturhinweise und ein Nach-

wort. Die Ausgabe wurde 2003 bei Philip Reclam jun. Stuttgart

publiziert.

Im Mittelpunkt dieses Projekts steht eine annotierte Bibliographie

sämtlicher deutscher Übersetzungen von Shakespeares Sonetten.

Sie wird im Internet veröffentlicht und fortlaufend aktualisiert wer-

den. Derzeit (Stand: Frühjahr 2003) umfaßt die Bibliographie über

60 komplette Übertragungen und über 140 Teilübersetzungen. Zu-

dem werden Kompilationen und eklektische Bearbeitungen ebenso

berücksichtigt wie auch Aufführungen, Lesungen und Kompositio-

nen. Vorgesehen sind Hypertext-Editionen einiger Übertragungen.

Seit der Antike sind Werke der Literatur, Philosophie, Musik und bil-

denden Kunst in varianten Fassungen überliefert. Obwohl das Pro-

blem der Varianten in der praktischen Editionsarbeit seit jeher eine

wichtige Rolle spielt, ist das Phänomen Variante noch nie systema-

tisch erforscht und dargestellt worden. Außerdem findet sich in der

Forschungsliteratur kaum ein interdisziplinärer Ansatz. In dem Band

(erscheint beim Ercih Schmidt Verlag, Berlin) werden Literaturwis-

senschaftler, Kunsthistoriker, Musikwissenschaftler, Philosophen

und Historiker die Variante aus möglichst vielen Perspektiven in Au-

genschein nehmen. Die zentrale Frage wird sein, worin die herme-

neutische und kulturelle Bedeutung von Varianten liegt. An

exemplarischen Beispielen aus zahlreichen Epochen wird die Frage

nach der Variante, ihre Bedeutung und Problematisierung theore-

tisch und praktisch neudurchdacht.
